Project Summary
The Men’s Club at Inchgarth Community Centre was created to fill a gap: plenty of groups existed for women, but there were no dedicated social opportunities for local men. Volunteers launched a simple weekly meet-up, and it has grown into a popular, well-used resource for men of all ages.
What Happens
The club provides an informal place for men to:
Socialise in a relaxed environment
Play pool, dominoes, snooker or cards
Chat over tea, biscuits and occasional treats
Attend either a weekly Thursday session or a newer Tuesday evening option
Sessions cost £1, keeping the group accessible.
Why It Works
The club addresses social isolation, which affects many men who are retired, bereaved, or living alone. It succeeds because it offers:
A consistent reason to get out of the house
No pressure or formal structure
A friendly, reliable space to meet others
Supportive volunteers who create a welcoming atmosphere
Attendance has grown from a few members to more than twenty each week.
Community Impact
The Men’s Club has:
Reduced loneliness among local men
Improved confidence and day-to-day wellbeing
Helped members rebuild routines and social connections
Created friendships across different ages and backgrounds
Many participants have shared that the group has had a significant, positive effect on their mental health and quality of life.
Easy to Replicate
This project shows that a successful men’s group can be started with minimal resources - just volunteers, a space, simple activities and regular meeting times. Its straightforward format makes it adaptable for other communities looking to support local men and reduce isolation.
