Project Summary
Souperb is a community-led food project based at Old Torry Community Centre. Chosen by local residents through the UDECIDE participatory budgeting programme, it provides free soup, toasties and refreshments in a friendly, welcoming setting. Since launching in March, the project has quickly become a valued space for connection within Torry.
What Happens
Souperb offers:
Free homemade soup, toasties, bread and drinks
A warm, safe space for anyone to drop in
Weekly Monday sessions from 11:30am–12:45pm
Surplus fresh produce supplied through CFINE, reducing food waste
The project is supported by UDECIDE funding and a small grant from Aberdeen Health & Social Care Partnership.
Why It Works
Souperb succeeds because it:
Provides a low-barrier way for people to socialise
Supports residents facing financial pressure or loneliness
Creates a relaxed, respectful environment with no expectations
Combines good food with genuine human connection
Local volunteers, including Lochside Academy students, support the project and help create a positive, multigenerational atmosphere.
Community Impact
Souperb has:
Brought people together across ages and backgrounds
Offered a consistent social space during difficult times
Strengthened community pride through resident-led decision making
Reduced food waste by using surplus ingredients
Created local volunteering opportunities
Visitors regularly highlight how much they value having a place to chat, feel included and engage with their neighbours.
Easy to Replicate
Souperb shows how a simple food-based project, powered by volunteers and surplus produce, can strengthen community connections. With a suitable venue, small grants and local support, a similar model can be adopted in any neighbourhood.
